Solution Provided | Pressure Safety Valve Sizing for a Multi-Phase Fluid
Discipline | Process, Mechanical
Carnac was engaged to assess the sizing and suitability of existing pressure safety valves installed on the high temperature reactor vessels present at an Alumina Refinery. This involved:
• Defining the over-pressurisation scenario;
• Determining process and fluid variables;
• Calculating relief flow, inlet loss and backpressure; and
• Valve sizing including liaising with vendors.
While the size of the pressure safety valve was found to be appropriate for current operations, Carnac identified a number of discrepancies in variables defined or used in previous calculations for the system and the lack of implementation of key operational instructions on the original data sheet associated with pumps feeding the reactor vessels.
